In my 30 years in the disability insurance industry, I have never received a letter like this from a broker. My broker, Maxine, shared the following story with me:
What We Do: A Story That Reminds Us
Every profession has its “why” reason that drives the long hours, the attention to detail, the hard conversations, and the decisions that might never make headlines but quietly change lives.
For those of us in the world of insurance, that “why” is often rooted in hope, protection, and the ability to help people prepare for the unthinkable. It’s not always glamorous. But every so often, a story comes along that reminds us exactly why this work matters.
Several years ago, we helped a producer write a disability insurance policy for Natalie B. , a dedicated attorney. Like most people who purchase disability insurance, Natalie probably hoped she’d never need it.
But life had other plans.
In 2020, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Then, in 2023, brain cancer. Despite these staggering challenges, Natalie continued to work sometimes full time, sometimes part time through her treatments.
Throughout these years, that disability policy became more than just paperwork. It became peace of mind. A safety net. A source of stability in a time of profound uncertainty. And most importantly, it gave Natalie the ability to focus on her health while maintaining her sense of independence and purpose.
We recently received a message from broker professional who helped put Natalie’s policy in place. They wrote:
“I have much to thank you for… Natalie is so happy she has this disability policy. I just want you to know how much I appreciate all you did for her. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!”
These words are a powerful reminder.
We don’t sell policies. We build lifelines. We protect futures. We give people the ability to face life’s hardest moments with dignity and support.
This story is not just about cancer. It’s about resilience, preparation, and compassion. It’s about the difference a well-crafted disability income policy can make in someone’s life when they need it most.
That’s why we do what we do.
